recently, the news item “a millennial in wuhan moves into an unfinished house” has sparked heated discussions on the internet, and yang xing (pseudonym), the said millenial, has also unexpectedly gone viral on the internet. born in 1996, yang xing took a loan to purchase a 120-square-meter house in wuhan's jiangxia district with the financial support of his parents. after paying off the loan in advance, yang xing, who did not want to continue living off his parents, spent nearly 20,000 yuan on simple renovations and officially moved into his first house, an unfinished house, on october 10, 2021.

why do you want to live in an unfinished house? what is it like to live there? how do you feel after your unexpected popularity? on november 5, a reporter from jimu news came to yang xing's home in search of answers to these questions.

a neat and cozy unfinished house

“welcome to my unfinished house.” walking into yang xing's house, the “special industrial style” instantly attracts one's attention. string lights hung at the entrance, the walls of the living room were half gray and white, and a folding table served as a dining table. two small sofas have been transformed into suspended sofas, with the bright yellow color brightening to the whole house. yang xing also carefully weaved a row of string lights at the bottom of the sofa. the coffee table in the living room consists of two picnic tables and on them are coffee pots, candle lights, and small houseplants. a clapboard is seen placed under the tv wall to display his favorite items, a faded guitar, an antique electric fan, a rocket model, and mini speakers. the water pipe on the balcony is decorated to look like a coconut tree, and the floor is lined with artificial lawn on which a camping table and chairs are placed. the shower and toilet are separated by a hanging curtain. in the kitchen, a shelf purchased from a second-hand market for 100 yuan is now being used as a storage rack. small though the kitchen might be, it is fully functional and meets his cooking needs. in the study room is a large bed, a desk, as well as an air conditioner...

different from the common impression of unfinished houses, yang xing's home is neat and cozy, and every detail shows its owner's attitude towards life. this “special style of house decor” also attracted many netizens, who even joked that this kind of primitive decoration is not too bad, with some even learning from him.

yang xing told jimu news that he was an art major from huangshi, hubei, who stayed in wuhan to work as a photographer after his graduation. his parents, both ordinary workers, started a business after being laid off. in 2017, with the help of his parents, he bought the house with a loan. “for an ordinary family, buying a house is a big deal. at that time, the family used all their money which was just enough for a down payment. i had to pay off a mortgage of 8,000 yuan every month.”

in order to pay off the mortgage as soon as possible, yang xing worked extra hard. in addition to being a director at an mcn (multi-channel network) agency, he also taught part-time classes at a university, and took on some private work online. in the end, the whole family worked together to pay off the mortgage in 3 years ahead of schedule.

renovating the house for less than 20,000 yuan in two months

yang xing said frankly that living in an unfinished house is his “only choice”. in fact, though he doesn't have enough money to renovate the house, he still wants to live in his own house earlier. “renting is too expensive, living in this unfinished housed will save me some money.” yang xing said that this is a way of life that he has chosen for himself.

“actually, my parents wanted to raise some money for me to renovate it, because they bought this house in preparation for my future marriage. but i turned their offer down because they have already sacrificed too much for me, and i don't want to continue to rely on them.”

however, the experience of living in an unfinished house is relatively awful, as it comes with inconveniences such as uneven ground, easy collection of dust, thick layers of dust on the toilet floor as it does not have backfilling... but these inconveniences did not stump yang xing, who has had strong hands-on skills since he was a child. “in july 2021, i started to renovate the house. i found workers to install the water and electricity lines in the house, backfilled the toilet floor, and waterproofed the toilet. it cost less than 5,000 yuan plus materials. after that, i used an old vacuum cleaner gifted to me by my friend to clear the dust. some of the building materials and furniture added later were ‘hand-me-downs’ from friends, and some were second-hand goods i bought on xianyu (a moblie application used for marketing second-hand goods), and some were picked up from the street.” yang xing told reporters that in order to solve the problem of dust on the walls, he applied hardener to the living room and master bedroom himself.

“i originally planned to sleep on the floor, but when my mother found out, she just couldn't bear it and so she sent me a bed. the total renovation cost was less than 20,000 yuan, which is all money i had saved myself from working. and it took a little over 2 months.”

in order to cut-down on the electricity fee, yang xing installed an intelligent control system in the bedroom. even in the hot summer, he never keeps his air conditioner on all night. when the temperature drops, the system automatically switches to the electric fan mode. “after half a year, i have only spent 355 yuan on electricity.” yang xing said proudly.

under yang xing's gradual renovations, the once unfinished house has gradually been given a breath of life.

sharing parts of his life by posting renovation videos

since september last year, yang xing has posted videos of the process of renovating the house by himself on social media platforms, which has received not only the attention and encouragement, but has renovation tips from many netizens.

more than a year after the account was opened, his most popular video now has more than 2 million views and 20,000 likes.

however, with the increased attention, yang xing was also questioned by many people #for the hype#. “are you planning to advertise goods next?” “if you have money for camping and surfing, why do you not have money to renovate your house?” in the face of these doubts, yang xing said, “at first, i only wanted to record my life, and i never expected to attract this much attention. i have friends who are camping bloggers, and since i'm a photographer, they invite me to help them with photography when they have camping and surfing activities, so i use their extra equipment to surf and camp without spending money. a team approached me and wanted me to do live commerce, but i turned them down. i am very cautious in this regard, and i have not thought about earning money through social media.”

if you had enough money, would you fully renovate your house? faced with the reporter's question, yang xing said that he has no such plan at the moment, “i prefer to spend my money where it counts the most. if i had to fully renovate the house, it would be because i wanted to start a family, but i really like this industrial style. i may reserve a room with cement floors and gray walls as my studio.”

yang xing's parents also visited his house, but they didn't stay overnight. “due to generational differences they couldn't accept living in an unfinished house, but they respect my choice.”

yang xing told reporters that he now has a fan group of more than 80 people, including some with the need to live in an unfinished house like him. “most of them are young people and moms, and so i share with them my experience renovating my house.” but he also said that he does not encourage people to follow after his footsteps, as living in an unfinished house is a personal choice. and he stressed that for families with children, painting the walls white is advisable. “one's childhood is very important, i hope every child gets to grow up in a bright environment.”

for yang xing, though the house is simple, there is a sense of belonging and happiness.“‘east or west, home is the best’. living in a well-furnished rental, regardless of how fancy, it is still not your home, meanwhile my unfinished home is one that i slowly but surely renovated with my own hands. making the basic luxurious, that's what life should be.”

in the eyes of many people who care about their quality of life, living in a dull gray unfinished house is difficult to accept. firstly, a variety of facilities are not available, which leads to inconveniences in one's daily life, and surrounded by gray walls it's difficult not to feel a sense of despair. second, some would lose face as it would appear to others that they can't even afford renovating their own house. however, many young people who in an effort to not feel left behind purchase a house are not able to save enough money to renovate a house in a short time. but if they continue to rent a house, the mortgage and rent becomes too heavy a burden. for this reason, moving into an unfinished house with simple renovations isn't a bad choice, as they could make house improvements while living in it.

an optimistic attitude and a love for life can turn what might be a “sad” experience into a fun and inspiring one. this was the unexpected joy yang xing experienced, who is a good example for many young people.

many people who buy houses in cities are more concerned about their sense of belonging and sustaining their motivation than about the size and luxury of their houses. in this sense, yang xing, with his hard-working spirit and strong hands-on skills, has made his dream bloom fully in this unfinished house. he built the house into an “industrial style” step by step. although lacking a complex ceiling and lavish wallpaper, it unexpectedly presents a simple, naturally trendy feel, hence attracting many young netizens' eyes at first sight with some even learning from his experience of renovating his home. it follows that life sometimes seems to close a door, but actually a lot of windows are open randomly, giving one a different scenery to enjoy.

coincidentally, a couple of days ago, a 24-year-old mr. ge returned from shanghai to his hometown xi'an and bought a commercial house of 106 square meters. he had already spent all his savings on down payments. in order to pay the mortgage and continue to save money for renovations, he immediately moved into the house. but he was optimistic. “i currently do not have enough money, but i will work harder.”

the house might be incomplete, but is life not rough in the beginning? we use our experience and lessons learned to gradually create the life we want, just as we use fragments from our daily life, the shadows of hard work and the company to create a home, letting the house really become a home. when there is love, living in an incomplete house can be made luxurious, and when young people face difficulties with optimism, absolutely they will embrace a better tomorrow with a smile.
